Tall Ship Sailing Organizations
A friend mentioned to me that one of your callers
was looking for opportunities to sail on a tall
ship.
The Soren Larsen is a wooden brigantine (square
rigged foremast, gaff rigged main mast), featured
in the BBC series "The Onedin Line" and in "The
French Lieutenant's Woman." She spends southern
hemisphere winters in the South Pacific (Fiji,
Tonga, Vanuatu, New Caledonia) and summers
operating around Auckland, New Zealand. She
carries 12 regular crew, and 22 "voyage crew",
working passengers, who participate in as much of
the ship's routine as they like, including going
aloft. I leave Saturday for a 7-week trip
aboard. You can reach them through Adventure
Center in San Francisco, (800) 227-8747, x213.
Current exchange rates make this a great bargain
right now.
The Maine Windjammer Association is a group of
independent schooner operators that spend the
summers on week-long trips off the Maine coast. I
sailed on one of these schooners in 1981 and had a
terrific time. The level of passenger
participation is not as high as what I anticipate
aboard Soren Larsen. Contact MWJ at 800-807-9463.
The American Sail Training Association is a sort
of trade organization for tall ships that provide
training opportunities. Many of these are open to
the general public. Their directory is available
for purchase at (401) 846-1775.
