Holiday plans...already?

You asked if I'm already making holiday plans. You betcha (as they say in Wisconsin)! I just got out of a minivan after an 18 and a half hour drive from Appleton, WI to Auburn, AL with a two-year old son (who did great on the trip!) and a 10- month old Golden Retriever (who flatulated the whole way home with some sort of gastronomical irregularity!) My wife and I decided that we'd search for some other means of travel for the trip back to Appleton over the Thanksgiving holiday.

So far, I've searched airline fares on Midwest Express (unquestionably the best airline in operation today), Northwest, and Delta. All the fares fall between $260 and $300 per person -- not a bad price ... but not a good deal either.

These fair to middlin' fares prompted me to check out Amtrak and Greyhound's web sites. There's some really interesting stuff listed: We could make it from Atlanta, GA to Milwaukee, WI for $179 on AMTRAK's "Explore America Fares", but it would take us 3 days to get there. (I think the $239 rate might buy us a 2-day trip.) Somehow, the thought of going coach-class for three days on a train with a two-year old doesn't appeal to me. Call me strange ...

Greyhound does offer some noteworthy fares in their "Discounts" section if you're departing from major hubs like Atlanta, GA or Dallas, TX. This, of course, doesn't help me much for the Thanksgiving itinerary.

All this to say, Rudy, I need your help. I'm need to get back to Appleton, WI between Nov 21 and Nov 29 for a family get-together. I don't have much money and I do have a two-year old. I'm even willing to drive again (without the flatulating canine) if I can find a good rate on a rental vehicle. Here' my order of preference:

  1. by air
  2. by rental, rail or bus
  3. by ferry up the Mississippi (I've never checked into this one, but presumably the waters are navigable up to LaCrosse, WI!)

Let me know if you can help out!

--- Norman
