Using ATMs While Traveling

We have enjoyed your regular contributions to Marketplace, so we're pleased that you got your own show (or that my local station picked it up).

On Saturday, 31 October, you fielded a question regarding automatic teller machine use in Europe. Allow me to relate my experience in Italy this summer:

We checked with our credit union before going and they assured us that no prefixes, no suffixes, nor fixes of any kind were needed to access our account with them from Italy (Europe?). Need I say, when we got to Italy we could not access our account. (We had travelers checks and a credit card along, so our vacation was not in jeopardy. See below for a credit card story...)

The problem was our ATM account is a SAVINGS account and the machines in Italy (Europe?) make withdrawals from CHECKING accounts only, with no provision for the consumer to direct that the withdrawal be made from a different type of account.
