Vacationing in Arizona
A couple of weeks ago Rudy got a call from a man asking about a
family vacation in Arizona. The reply on air was not bad but here's
some better stuff for his file.
A side trip to Tombstone is an easy day drive from Tucson. There, one
can visit the O.K. Corral and Boot Hill. The latter is on private
property so there's an admission charge, but it's worth the chance to
read the tombstone inscriptions. Any child or adult who has enjoyed
Western movies would enjoy that.
A second thing that can be done on the same day's drive is to go to
the old mining town of Bisbee. The silver mine just off the main
square offers a guided tour and one goes into the mine on the narrow
gauge mine train with lighted helmet and rain gear. Lots of fun and
very informative. Across the main square was (maybe still is) a little
Italian cafe with the best coffee we experienced in the southwest.
And a third thing to do outside Tucson is to drive straights south to
Nogales, Arizona, park your car on the U.S. side, and walk into a real
Mexican town. Make sure you have your passport, birth certificates, or
other proof of citizenship. Do not take your car over the border
(waste of time and insurance expense). Visit the shops, enjoy a real
Mexican meal, etc.
We also just drove through parts of the desert, stayed at a motel that
had free tennis courts, and generally got away from winter at very
modest expense. In our case we had to fly to San Diego and rent a car
there, but from points in the U.S. it must be very easy to get to
Tucson.
