The High Cost of Hunting
In listening to your caller who was looking for grouse hunting
in Scotland and your response of the 'princely' sum for a guided hunt,
there was speculation of why so expensive. Most likely it is the same
reason salmon fishing is expensive. What we in the U.S. take much for
granted is our public park system. For us, all we need is the fishing
or hunting license and an authorized spot to pursue the sport. In the
U.K., the rivers and lands are considered private grounds (belonging
to the landed gentry or nobility.)
It is illegal to fish in what looks like a public
place since it "belongs" to a private entity and the licenses
are in high demand and are restricted. I imagine this would
apply to any other type of hunting or fishing as well. So the
caller would be best advised to do her hunting in Minnesota and
spend her travel money enjoying the other wonderful things the
U.K. has to offer!
