Favorite Customs

One of my favorite customs comes from Austria. As Austrians sit around the ski cabin, toasting the new year, they take decorative little pieces of lead, melt them with a lighter, and drip them into a pan of cold water. The shape into which the metal hardens then represents an omen for the coming year. As the night wears on, the interpretations get wilder. More than once, I've had these wacky alpine predictions come true--and even when they didn't, it was a great way to ring in the new year with friends.
