Traveling the National Parks
Hello, Rudy and crew! Really enjoy
the show, heard on WVXU 91.7 here
in Cincinnati, Sat., 10-11 a.m.
One of my travel passions -- the
National Park System in the US.
In fall 1995, a friend and I did a 75-
day, 11,000 mile drive visiting most
of the Parks west of the Mississippi.
I'd just left my firm, she'd retired
from teaching, so we had "schedule
flexibility."
For various reasons -- local weather
(usually snow), park closings
during the November '95
government shutdown, one of us
had "been there, done that" -- we
"missed" Crater Lake, Lassen,
Yosemite, Grand Canyon and
Canyonlands, Rocky Mountain. But
that still leaves all the Parks in SD,
WY, MT, WA, and many in CA, UT,
and Mesa Verde, CO. I think we
were in 16 of the 22 or so that I
identified. Not to mention the many
wonderful National Monuments
along the way.
It was a fantastic odyssey! Along the
way, we tried to indulge in as many
thermal springs as possible, from
the delights of Thermopolis, WY at
the north end of the Wind River
Canyon, to the city pool in Ourey, CO.
Along the Pacific coast, lighthouse-
visiting became another
"must-do." And on the mad dash
home (did it have to end so soon?),
we stopped in Eureka Springs, AR
which was lighted for Christmas.
Every building was encrusted with
lights; it was pretty and magical.
Budget and time permitting, a lap
around Switzerland's perimeter
could be next. Strasbourg, through
Bavaria, Austria's high points
(pun?), Venice, Italy's north,
French coast, back to Strasbourg.
Let's bring those airfares down!!!
