Disabled Traveler
For a short while (three months) I was in a wheelchair after a
broken pelvis. I had to make several trips by airplane. On one
hand, the airlines (in most cases US Airways) were very kind and
helpful. However, each trip I was given a Mickey Mouse Button
about 2 inches round that I was told I "had to" wear. It gave
the name of the city from which I was departing, through which
I was connecting and to which I was traveling. No matter that I
was over 50, had a Ph.D., had no brain damage or hearing or
speech impairment, because I was in a wheelchair, I was treated
like a child. It gave me a renewed appreciation for the
challenges permanently disabled people faced every day.
