Travel Film Nominee

"Braveheart" inspired me to travel all the way across the Atlantic! The beauty of the scenery was so compelling in the film, I had a strong sense of place and found the urge to see it in person irresistible.

When I first saw "Braveheart," my husband and I had been planning a second honeymoon trip for our 10th anniversary. We had narrowed the destinations down to two: Disney World or the Grand Canyon.

Then we saw "Braveheart."

As the credits rolled, I turned to my husband and blurted, "I don't want to go to Disney, I want to go to Scotland!"

He just smiled and said, "Then you need to update your passport."

Three months later, we were treading the ground of William Wallace. We rented a car and stayed exclusively at bed and breakfasts, touring from Glasgow to the Isle of Skye to Loch Ness to Edinburgh to the Borders and back. We LOVED the quiet reserve of the generous natives, the wide-open countryside whose weather changes by the minute, and the complete lack of crowds and hustle-bustle.

Shortly after we returned, my husband said, "That's the most expensive movie I ever saw!"

Later, I was cruising the 'Net and I happened upon an email address for Mel Gibson. With tongue in cheek, I emailed him an "invoice" for the cost of our trip, for which I held him completely responsible because of "Braveheart."

I received a return receipt indicating that the email had been read, but no reply from Mel. Oh, well. I guess I can't expect to have my haggis and eat it too.
