Homesick for Tokyo
How can one be homesick for a place where only three weeks were spent?
Your feature on Tokyo and travel in Japan did just that. In October 1998,
I spent three weeks in Japan as a part of the Fulbright Memorial Fund
Teacher Program as a guest of the Japanese government visiting the schools
and experiencing the culture of Japan. The descriptions of Shinjuku
station were so right on that all of a sudden I was right there again.
This was my first experience abroad but I can't imagine anywhere in the
world where "a stranger in a strange land" would feel more welcome. The
people are wonderful -- Japan is my recommendation for anyone looking for
a destination abroad. It is truly a place where the ancient and the modern
coexist and an experience that I'll always cherish!
