New York Stereotypes
"...the real New York experience, rudeness at no charge."
I was so surprised to hear this stereotype repeated on your
show! Two weeks ago I took my first trip to New York, spending
two weeks in Cairo (Catskills) and three days in New York City.
We were on the street almost non-stop during those three days
and didn't encounter a single person who was less than
incredibly helpful and friendly. I think a lot of the bad rap
stems from the fact that many visitors think they have to put on
a tough facade so they don't look like easy marks for crime.
THEY don't behave in a friendly way, so how can they expect it
in return? We visited with cab drivers and street vendors who
gave us wonderful service and little extras because they said WE
treated THEM so nicely.
Living in the Northwest, I can definitely see a difference in
manner -- people in the east tend to be much more direct. But
rude? You get from others what you give, no matter which city
you visit.
