Getaways
This may not be too exotic, but when I lived in New York, my 
favorite place was Prospect Park, bordering the Park Slope 
neighborhood in Brooklyn.  
It's really a gem, and although the 
park is used by a great variety of people, especially on the 
weekend, it has enough trails and space to really get away from 
the hustle and bustle of the city.  And, unlike Central Park in 
Manhattan, there are places where you can't see any buildings, so 
you really can get the feeling of escape.  And it borders both 
the Brooklyn Botanical Garden (another favorite) and the Brooklyn 
Museum, lately in the news.
But there are actually several "public spaces" in Manhattan, too, 
where you can get some quiet, if you have a minute to spare, in 
New York.  These are spaces that were mandated inside the lobbies 
of new buildings, and a few of them really provide a pleasant 
respite.
