Decline in worldwide acceptance of AmEx
My wife and I just returned from a three-week driving tour of
France. What we re-learned was to follow the suggestions of the
Sav Trav. When we offered American Express Travelers Cheques in
French francs, what we heard was, "non, non, non; carte credit,
s'il vous plait"; and, when we offered an American Express
credit card, it was, "Visa, s'il vous plait." The banks, if
they would accept the American Express Travelers Cheques in
French francs, charged from six and a half to 10 percent to change them into
francs. We had to resort to using our Visa at ATM's, which
brings me back to the original premise: You suggested this as a
best alternative to carrying cash in France. You were right,
again! Thanks for your show and Web site.
