Travel Lies
One of the questions one finds themselves answering on an airplane
is, "What do you do?"
I find this question difficult. When I answer, "I'm in the Air Force."
The next question is, "Are you a pilot?".
"No," I reply, "a mechanic."
"On which plane?"
"No planes, I'm a vehicle mechanic."
It must seem unreal that the Air Force has wheeled vehicles. I
answer, "I work for the Department of Defense."
"What do you do?"
"I'm sorry, I can't answer that." (Technically true.)
The person immediately becomes more interested. The questions are now
aimed at finding out what I do, if I'm traveling on business or
pleasure (I usually answer, "both!"), why I'm going where I'm going,
etc. Each answer is vague. It may not be nice, but it makes long
flights interesting and eliminates the uncomfortable silence that
ensues when they comprehend vehicles operated and maintained by the
Air Force.
