Return to Sighet
Dear Rudy,
You once asked, "What was a unique reason you took a trip?" Here's my
response.
My mother is a Holocaust survivor and author. In 1995, at the age of 72,
she, along with her four daughters and a videographer, journeyed from our
home in Oregon to her hometown of Sighet, a tiny mountain village in
northwest Romania. We found her childhood home, a house she hadn't seen in
50 years. We were even allowed to go inside. We retraced her steps to the
Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland, stayed in a convent right
next to the camp, and saw the barracks where she slept. Then, we made our
way to Bergen-Belsen in Germany, the camp from which she was liberated by
the British and American forces 50 years prior.
It was an incredible journey on many levels, one I will never forget.
Geri
