Mall Origins Demystified
Dear Rudy,
On a recent show, one of your listeners wondered why the National
Mall in Washington, D.C. is called a "mall". In Philadelphia we have
Independence Mall, and of course you are familiar with Pall Mall in
London. The latter took its name from a croquet game that was played
there. Eventually the green took on the name of the hammer-like
instrument used in that game, and the word has evolved to mean a more
formal type of green.
Thanks for the show. I look forward to your broadcast every week.
James
