Quitting Vegas Cold Turkey

Dear Rudy,

On one of your shows you asked listeners to name a place they'd never want to return to. My response would be Las Vegas, Nevada.

I have been married (and divorced) twice -- both times in Vegas. Neither marriage was planned, and neither marriage lasted very long. I think I knew from the moment I said "I do" that the relationship was doomed. But there's something about Vegas that encourages you to indulge irrational behavior. You feel free to do things you wouldn't normally do just because you're in Vegas. It seems like that's what the city is there for. It almost gives you permission to be stupid.

The problem is eventually my vacations came to an end and I had to face the harsh reality of life with a guy I really didn't like. He was great for a couple days of gambling, shows and buffets, but not to build a life with. Some people leave Vegas broke. I left married. I don't know which is worse.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with getting married in Vegas -- just like there's nothing wrong with a little gambling. But after my last bitter divorce, I swore I'd never go back. Now I'm saving up for an adventure trip to Brazil. The tour company tells me there are no wedding chapels in the rain forest.

Tandy
