Waterton Lakes: Park Perfection Across the Border
Dear Savvy Traveler,
Recently, we took a trip to Montana to spend a week at Glacier National Park. Our reservation got bumped, and since it was peak season, it was hard to find alternative accommodations. The lodge where we had planned to stay couldn't squeeze us in until midweek - leaving us with three days to kill.
We decided to go to Waterton Lakes National park - the Canadian park that abuts Glacier. What a delight! The wildlife is even more plentiful there than across the border at Glacier, and we had no trouble finding accommodations. (We stayed at Waterton Lakes Lodge, which was terrific.) Another plus of Waterton: a great exchange rate.
So what did we end up doing? We rafted for an entire afternoon for $15. We ate at the lovely Prince of Wales Lodge and reveled in the elk wandering through town. We saw bears on the trails and prairie dogs popping up everywhere in the campground.
If you enjoy hiking and the outdoors but not necessarily camping, this is a great place. Oh yes, we did make it back to Montana and had a nice time there as well. You know what they say: When life hands you lemons...
