Rundown for the week of September 27, 1997

The Vagabond Traveler

Travel columnist Doug Lansky is our "Vagabond Traveler." He roams from place to place, finding odd jobs, working his way in to fun spots - and then telling us all about it. This week he was in Marinello, Italy where they build, test, and display Ferraris and he phoned me up to tell me what he saw and did.

Q&A I

Rudy answers listeners' calls.

--A Belgian airline started by City Hotels of Belgium. It's been around for six years, and has been running in the US as of March 30th of this year.

--Flies from Brussels to Newark, Miami, LA, Orlando, Oakland, and Mexico City.

Mayberry Daze

"The Andy Griffith Show" premiered in October 1960 and went on to become one of the most successful and longest-running programs in television history.

Today, reruns of the show remain as popular as ever. Devoted fans know every street corner and resident of Mayberry, the fictitious southern town where Griffith - as sheriff Andy Taylor - kept the peace.

Mayberry was a creation of Hollywood. But it was inspired by the real-life town of Mount Airy, North Carolina. And TV's Mayberry has made Mount Airy a major tourist attraction - never more than this weekend, during the annual "Mayberry Days" festival. The Savvy Traveler's Tom Verde is there.

Photo Op

David Kennerly won a Pulitzer Prize for photography during the Vietnam War working for UPI. He later became a White House photographer for the Ford Administration and currently works for Newsweek and George magazine. Rudy talks with him about how you can take better photos.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology

The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles lies somewhere in the territory between the staid Smithsonian Institution and the sensational Ripley's Believe It Or Not. The subject of a best selling book by Lawrence Wechsler called Mr Wilson's Cabinet of Wonders, the museum counts several directors and curators of prestigious museums among its members. The Savvy Traveler's Fritz Faerber went to see what the hoopla's all about.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology can be reached at 310-836-6131 It's at 9341 Venice Blvd and is open Thursdays 2-8 pm and Friday-Sunday noon to 6 pm. Admission is $4 for adults and $2.50 for students and seniors.

Deal of The Week

Whatdya get when you combine autumn leaves with a great exchange rate? The answer: Canada. And that's my deal of the week.

Once, Canada was expensive for Americans, but no more--the Canadian dollar is only worth 78 cents. So it might be a good time to take advantage of an airfare-hotel package from Air Canada to, say, Montreal or Quebec. If you travel in October, Air Canada will fly you between New York and Montreal and put you up in a Quality Inn for two nights for only $279 per person. It's $30 less beginning in November. And that includes dinner for the two of you.

Get the same deal in Quebec for 379 per person in October, 50 less starting in November. If you want to stay in fancier hotels, that option is available, too, as are departures from more than 25 other US cities for slightly more. Check it out with Air Canada or your travel agent.

Montreal or Quebec--it's like celebrating fall in France without the jet lag. That's my deal of the week.

Q&A II -- Once Is More Than Enough

Rudy takes calls from listeners about travel destinations that don't deserve a visit.

Silent Retreat

As you may have noticed, some of our Savvy Traveler contributors tend to take unconventional vacations. Judie Fein may take the cake with this one. Here's a postcard she dropped us from Arizona, where she took a retreat to a monastery.

Next Week on The Savvy Traveler

Remember when we were all born to be wild...as we get older it's more like born to be mild..or is it? How did you travel in your salad days and has the style to which you've become accustomed changed over the years. Your thoughts on travel then and now in next week's journey with the Savvy Traveler. We'll also meet a young woman who took on the challenge of the highest road on Earth.

That and more in next week's voyage with the Savvy Traveler. I hope you'll join us.

If you want your very own copy of The Savvy Traveler, order an audio cassette. It's easy. Just call 303-823-8000. The price is $15. As Rudy says, it's a steal.
