Rundown for the Week of June 10, 2000

Summer by the Sea: Oqunquit, Maine
We stop in the seaside village of Oqunquit, Maine, a place with more hotel rooms than registered voters. Around this time of the year Oqunguit gets the summer tourist invasion. So how do the locals feel about outsiders taking over their town for a few short months each year? The Savvy Travelers Keith Shorthall checks it out.

Survival Skills
Some journalists find themselves traveling to report from war zones and other dangerous places. This is risky business. One way to reduce a journalist's chances of encountering danger is to take a course that's very popular with war correspondents. We decided to send Martin Stott and see if he could pick up some tips for any traveler. We'll let him tell you about it.

Keeping in Touch: Email Shops around the World
In February, Anne-Marie Ruff and her husband Peter packed up their life in Los Angeles, bought one-way tickets to Thailand and moved to the island of Koh Samui. In the two years since they last visited, the pair discovered that paradise has been wired. Anne-Marie tells us how the email shop is changing the nature of travel.

The Kiss
We get some advice from Our Vagabond Traveler Doug Lansky, who's all too familiar with those awkward, social situations when you don't know the etiquette for greeting someone from another country. Two or three pecks on each cheek? Kissing rules coming up.

Interview: How to Travel Around the World
Edward Hasbrouk is the author of the book, Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World. He stopped by recently to chat about travel trends among the young. Our host asked him if he thinks young people are on a search for paradise or are there other compelling reasons they have to see the world?

Next Week
Be sure to come along for the ride again next week when we take a trip far, far north, to a place where magic can be found in even the most mundane of settings.

"Inside it's as modern and comfortable as any suburban house. It could be anywhere, except for the whales out the window."

A motorcycle ride through enchanted Canada. And a different kind of sighting on the road. Ever been on a plane or waiting for your luggage? You turn to befriend the person next to you and then realize he or she looks suspiciously familiar?

"He was just, you know, a little hair growing out of his ears, a toupe colored wrong. Had on a very frumpy tweedy coat and baggy pants."

Your stories of celebrity sightings on the road, and much, much more during next week's edition of The Savvy Traveler.

Cassette Copies
If you want your very own copy of The Savvy Traveler, order an audio cassette. It's easy. Just call 303-823-8000. The price is $15.
