Rundown for the Week of July 15, 2000
The Door to Infinity
Our first stop this week is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Business
travelers often have a few hours at the beginning or end of their
trips to see the sights. Hardly enough time to see a whole city. But
if you are going to Kuala Lumpur, seeing the whole city can be as
quick as a 60 second elevator ride... in theory. Anne-Marie Ruff
visited the Petronas Towers, the tallest building in the world, which
has recently opened its elevators to the public.
High-Tech Hotels
Are you deluged with dozens of email messages a day? Does it make
going out of town, on business or pleasure, a daunting task? Well, an
increasing number of hotels are equipping their rooms with high-speed
Internet hookups. But as Savvy Traveler producer Tanya Ott tells us,
the taste for high-tech doesn't just stop there. We go on journey
into hotel futurama.
In the Footsteps of the Gods
Picture the Aegean Sea surrounding Lesvos, the most enchanting of the
Greek Islands. They say that in ancient times, the oracles listened
to the whisper of wind in the trees to foretell the future and divine
the wishes of the gods. Surely the voice of the gods must still echo
in the mountains of this beautiful island. The Savvy Traveler's Jim
Metzner takes us along on his journey to the isle of Lesvos.
A Second Glance at Alaska Airlines
Two weeks before Alaska Air Flight 261 crashed into the Pacific,
commentator Geo Beach rode an Alaska Air MD-80 on the same Puerto
Vallarta - San Francisco route with his wife and two young daughters.
Geo continues to fly around Alaska and across the country, but he's
been talking to fellow Alaskans and thinking more carefully about the
airline industry.
Work to Live
Joe Robinson is the Editor and Publisher of the adventure-travel
Escape Magazine. He's also the organizer behind "Work to Live", a
grassroots lobbying effort that pushes for more federally mandated
vacation time in America. We recently spoke with Joe and asked him
how the United States compares to the rest of the world when it comes
to vacation time.

Next Week
We visit Hawaii and explore the many layers behind the usual
trappings of a tropical vacation. For instance, the hula, it seems,
has far more to it than grass skirts worn by pretty islanders.
"A week ago, if someone would have told me that my big six-foot-five
Buddah of a husband would be doing the hula, I would have laughed out
loud. But he is so entranced by the dance. And honestly, if I may say
so, so beautiful in it, that I know he is only half joking when he
suggests we move here."
Discover the real Hawaii at the end of the road... and the true
meaning of Aloha during next week's edition of The Savvy Traveler.
