The Evolution of Travel
Our first stop this week is Providence, Rhode Island, where we step
backwards into time. You know, developments in rail, air, sea and
automobile transportation around the turn of the 20th century not
only made it easier for more people to travel, they inspired changes
in the way travelers dressed and pampered themselves. That's the
focus of an exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design where The
Savvy Traveler's Tom Verde journeyed to explore travel of the past.
Scotland by Mail
Traveling around Scotland may look easy on the map, but a simple
journey of a couple of hundred miles from the mainland to the remote
isles can take a day or two on public transportation. Adam Fowler
took the soft option and flew to the Outer Hebridean Island of Barra,
where getting around proved to be easier than he imagined, thanks to
a unique bus service. But if you're interested in finding out more,
don't look for it at the bus station. Try the post office instead.
The First Motel
Motels aren't for everyone, but this summer millions of Americans
will stay in them without giving a thought to the motel's origin.
Savvy Traveler Rachel Anne Goodman took her own road trip to find the
world's first motel.
Keeping a Grip on Fantasy
Why is it that the places you visit always seems more glamourous than
the place you live? Do you ever land in another city or country and
think, "Y'know, I was meant to live here..." Fantasies aren't always
meant to become reality and it may turn out that home wasn't so bad
after all. Mary Lou Weisman has more.
