Rundown for the Week of September 1, 2000
The Streets of Cairo
Cairo is one of the worlds' most populous cities. Along its bustling
streets, taxi cabs and donkey carts compete for traffic lanes. High
heeled ladies click past street vendors straight out of the pages of
Arabian Nights. It's the riotous and timeless street life of
the city that we explore in this segment of our series on Cairo
through the eyes of historic visitors. The Savvy Traveler's Tom Verde
is our guide.
Travel the Palestinian West Bank
Many visitors to the Middle East go to Israel, but few
tourists venture into the Palestinian National Authority on the West
Bank. The Savvy Traveler's Judie Fein tells us how she tracked down
some hard-to-find guides and became a two-timer in the Palestinian
Territories.
Singles Vacation
Club Med isn't really a club. It's 50 so-called villages sprinkled
along the equator. The villages are categorized into three groups.
Family Villages for parents and their kids, Adult Villages and
Everybody Villages. But it's not for everybody. Especially not
reporter Alex Blumberg. But we sent him anyway, to check out the
singles scene at an Adult Village on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.
Alex discovered that,it takes a village to act like a child.
India in the 21st Century
Since she was a teenager, Maxine Davis dreamed of traveling to
India. Her mother had been there many times, and the films she took
had given Max images she held in her mind for decades. For her 50th
birthday, she took a month off and finally got her dream trip. Later,
she sent us this postcard.
Intvw: Armistead Maupin
When you think of San Francisco in the '70s, nothing is more
evocative of the city's freewheeling and provocative lifestyle than
Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City. So when we invited
Armistead to tell us about a place he loves we expected him to talk
about his city by the bay. Instead, he surprised us and said that
he'd like to talk about a tiny village in New Zealand where he used
to have a weekend place.

Next Week
Steel yourself because we're embarking on one of our infamous Bad
Taste Tours. This one takes us to Kansas which, I'm sure you're
aware, is the Barbed Wire Capital of the World!
"I spent most of my time walking around saying, 'Ooh, more barbed
wire. And just when you think it can't get any more interesting. It
doesn't.'"
The Barbed Wire Museum. And if that isn't weird enough, meet a guy
who gives new meaning to traveling the hard way. You think a couple
of suitcases are tough to lug around, try carrying a refrigerator
with you wherever you go!
"It was a Friday night and I said, 'Well, I'll just put my stuff in
the guest house', and they said, 'Well, bring the fridge, you can't
leave the fridge in a hotel on a Friday night. You'll have to bring
the fridge with you now, come on now don't be silly.'"
Is a refrigerator the perfect travel companion? Find out when you
come along for the ride during next week's edition of The Savvy
Traveler.
