Stalking the Amish by Michelle Kholos
Listen
in RealAudio
Even with world increasingly becoming one big global village, it's still fun to travel to places where people have all come from just a few families throughout many centuries: the Khan family in Pakistan, the Mayan villages in Belize...and, yes, the Amish in Pennsylvania. Michelle Kholos takes us on a buggy ride in Lancaster County, where the residents are more alike than they are different -- and the draw for tourists is the local people themselves. Welcome to Amish country.

Beautiful Badlands Postcard by Dave Karlotski
Listen
in RealAudio
When you ask well-traveled people if they have been to all 50 states, they seem to miss a couple of them -- and most likely, they're the Dakotas. Many have never passed through South Dakota, and the Badlands area is one of the few untouched areas left in the "lower 48." It's a place where even the name brims with mystique. Dave Karlotski went to the Badlands and sent us this postcard. After hearing Dave's description of these untouched panoramas, you'll want to make this trip, too.

The Sound of Music Tour Pilgramage to Saltzberg with Cash Peters
Listen
in RealAudio
Cash Peters has been on the road for a couple of years on what he calls a "Bad Taste Tour," visiting places like the Paris Sewer Tour and a Urology Museum -- unquestionably tasteless, but fun. Cash's book about his Bad Taste trips, "Gullible's Travels," will be out June 2nd. This week, Cash has yet another stop on the tour for us: the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, Austria. Problem is, is it bad taste or just high kitsch?

Sound Travels Lava Flow, Hawaii's Big Island
Listen
in RealAudio
"Sound travels," the part of our show when we travel with just our ears as our guide, takes us to active volcanoes of Hawaii. Doug Hodge, a sound recordist specializing in Hawaii, recorded this lava flow, which was moving about 12 inches a minute down the slopes of Mount Kilauea. This type of lava is a silicate liquid -- it's made up of the same stuff as glass -- which is why, as the edges and front start to cool, they also start to shatter, like a river of window panes moving down the side of a mountain, constantly breaking.
