Travelers' Aid: Hoof and Mouth Disease & The Future of Space Travel Hoof and Mouth Disease Updates Checking in on the Savvy Traveler website shows a lot of people are confused about the outbreak of "Hoof and Mouth" disease in the UK and how it may affect their upcoming travel plans to the British Isles. We've checked in with travel man Rudy Maxa, in Washington D.C. today to get an update... The Future of Space Travel Last week, two shuttle astronauts set off into space on a nine-hour space walk - the longest in the history of the shuttle program. This comes almost 36 years after the very first space walk in 1965 - a paltry 10-minute affair. It puts a little perspective on that conversation I had earlier with Ray Bradbury. Nine hours in space is a long way from Mars. But what about the reality of Bradbury's vision? Will there be a time when space is for the general public? Do we even want to go? I spoke this week with someone who's been there. Jim Buchli flew on four shuttle missions. He retired after 20 days, 10 hours in space. Jim says the dreams of space are one thing...the reality of it is a little different. He does, say, however, that if tickets do one day go on sale, he'll be among those eagerly waiting in line... As you might imagine, there are a number of companies developing the ships that may one day take us to the stars. And, like the early days of aviation, there's a prize fueling their desire. The X-Prize Foundation is offering $10 million to anyone who can send three private citizens to space - twice - within a two-week period. Peter Diamandis is the founder of the X-Prize.... If you'd like us to address your travel questions or concerns, send us an email. Or, you can snail-mail them in. The address is The Savvy Traveler, in care of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90007. Or call us at 888-SAV-TRAV.
