Favorite Travel Author

I was turned on to Paul Theroux at a young age. My mother sent me a copy of "Riding the Red Rooster" when I was in the Air Force, stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

It took two years, but I managed to retrace his route. Beginning in Japan, I came home to the states for a week or two, then flew to Germany to visit my grandmother. I caught a train in Berlin that took me into the USSR (at the time). After a few days in Moscow, I caught the Rossiya Express, and headed off to Siberia. Next stop was Irkutsk, on Lake Baikal. Then south, through Mongolia to Beijing. (had to bribe my way into Mongolia) From Beijing I continued by rail to Hong Kong, then flew to Taiwan, and finally caught a freighter to Okinawa.

It was a wonderful trip, completely inspired by the writing of Paul Theroux. I've read travel books by Peter Theroux, but they lack sparkle. I'm not sure if they are related??

I have pictures of my journeys at:
