Beating the Curse of the Single Traveler
We know a woman who says, you know someone is for you if you can
cross America in a covered wagon with them. Now that may seem
extreme, but you know how hard it is to find someone who matches your
travel speed. The Savvy Traveler's Wesley Weissburg has found an
antidote for the single traveler who doesn't want to stay that way.
Set Sail on a Skipjack
Summer visitors to the nation's capitol may want to take a day trip
to the eastern shore of Maryland to explore the rich history of the
Chesapeake Bay. Wooden sailboats called Skipjacks were once a common
sight on its waters, harvesting oysters with iron dredges. But
nowadays, they've all but disappeared. Lex Gillespie set sail aboard
one of the Chesapeake's last remaining Skipjacks, the H.M. Krentz, to
see what it's like.
Rafting the Grand Canyon
Over the years, we've gotten familiar with the adventures of Hal
Cannon, founding director of the Western Folklife Center, and his
wife, writer and painter Teresa Jordan. They've taken us along on
many of their extraordinary trips through the western United States.
The first one took place one summer when they joined a group for
their first rafting trip down the Colorado River, through the heart
of the Grand Canyon. This week, we revisit that journey.
Hitchhiking in the Czech Republic
Hitchhiking through a foreign country may not be the fastest way to
travel, but it does sometimes allow us a candid glimpse inside
another culture. The Savvy Traveler's Scott Rosenberg sends us a
postcard from his memorable, but not always comfortable, journey
through Czechoslovakia.
Field Notes from the Grand Canyon
Our host speaks with Teresa Jordan, who took her sketchbook and
watercolors along with her to document the journey she and her
husband Hal Cannon took down the Colorado River. She's compiled these
observations into a new book entitled Field Notes from the Grand
Canyon: Raging River Quiet Mind.
