Holiday Time Travel by Tony Kahn
Because Thanksgiving seems to be the time for family to gather around the hearth, it becomes not only the holiday for literal travel but also for travels in memory. Our Traveler at Large Tony Kahn has done plenty of traveling. But today he takes us on a trip not really that far - in space anyway - from his Massachusetts home.

As the old Simon & Garfunkle song puts it, "We've all gone to look for America." An apt line after September 11, when many Americans are rethinking their values and their country as they'd want it to be.

There's a literal take on this, too. We really have gone to look for America, out on the ground. Greyhound is reporting a definite increase in long-haul travel this fall - trips of over 1,000 miles. Travelers are still uneasy about flying are criss-crossing the country by bus.

One of the places we went to look for America this year was the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. We sent reporter Alix Spiegel to see what stories she could find there.

In keeping with the American tradition of exploring and appreciating this land of ours, we thought we'd take you to the beginning of a trip we've been following this last summer and fall. Contributor Barrett Golding and his friend Joe rode their bikes along the Lewis and Clark route of two centuries ago, a trip that gets you imagining what America was like in its early days. And like Lewis and Clark, Barrett and Joe had their hands full with the preparations.

There's a lot of classic America to see - from the vast Grand Canyon to the leggy Rockettes. And there are a number of lesser-known American institutions maybe even more worth visiting. Leave it to our reporter Benjamin Adair to find a music fest with such long-standing history that it taps as deeply into American roots as Plymouth Rock. Some people call it "the last great picnic" and the music mixes the fife and drum sounds of the British colonials with the drum rhythms brought to early America from Africa. A pilgrimage down South to this last great picnic is a distinctly American experience, one that lightens a heavy heart, if you're in the right frame of mind.
